On the size of Yurivania 3's play space~

Here’s the work-in-progress map of Yurivania 3

If you’ve played the prior three games you might notice that all of their maps are embedded within this map. That was one of my design goals for this iteration: revisit everywhere we’ve been before, plus add some new places.

So I’ve been building out the map of Yurivania 3 organically, reusing as much as I could (with needed tweaks) from the prior games and creating new areas that felt like they should be there.

But today I discovered that, completely by chance, Yurivania 3 has nearly the same number of playable screens as Castlevania 3!

  • Yurivania 3 has 341 screens-worth of space. (Only 309 are pictured on the map.)
  • Castlevania 3 has 357 screens-worth of space. (Of course, both games have a good deal of additional screens, as cut scenes and menus, etc.)

It’s interesting to me that I landed on such a similar play space. By contrast, Yurivania 1 had only 68 screens and Castlevania 1 had 108.

This also means that in terms of playable areas, again completely by chance, Yurivania 3 is exactly five times the size of Yurivania 1!

This fits well with my design goals and is an expression of how this imaginary setting has grown and flourished over the course of four games. But I hope I haven’t accidentally made it too big….

Yurivanias 0, 1, and 2 all had this nice, neat jam-game size that meant you could easily play through them in one or two sessions. The next one might be longer than this, and I hope that doesn’t scare some folks away.

Only time and play-testing will tell, I suppose!
